Try adjusting the tone. If that doesn't work, make sure that your suspension screws are properly tightened so you're not getting too much wobble. Also, make sure there's nothing wrong with the needle.
Understand though that vinyl will never have a cd quality sound. I've noticed in my small collection that some vinyls sound great (i.e., the xx) and others have a bit more muffled old-school vinyl sound. I don't know enough about record engineering to say if that's intentional or not.
If someone you know owns the same turntable and is getting better sound that what is coming out of yours, there just may be an issue. I know I have a different Crosley and the same records that sound great on this one sound muffled, like they are being played through a tunnel, on the other one.
