No, the legs are inside the sofa. How, you ask? It's really a cool design process: the bottom of the sofa has a secret zippered compartment that contains the two arms, the two "tube pillows" and the four legs. Thus, the box is as flat as the thickness of the seat cushion, since it ships in the "bed position". Then you just unzip the secret compartment, take out the parts, screw them on and voila, you're done. Note: One of our legs had a slight issue with the screw-in part, and while it was still usable, UO sent me a replacement leg free of charge to have as a backup. Great cust. service.

The legs are not attached. It comes in a package that's probably less than 12" wide...you would definitely be able to get this up a narrow staircase.

For mine, the legs were in this secret compartment in the body of the couch. Sounds crazy, but it fit through my super-narrow hallway
