it is adjustable...one rod is slightly smaller and slides in and out of the other rod.

It just pulls in and out. One rod is smaller and fits inside the larger rod and you just slide them apart or together.

I couldn't get mine to extend until I screwed the finials on the end then it came out quite easily.

more than likely yes but you would need to secure one of the supports for the middle to support the weight of the combined rods.

That wouldn't work. The end of the rod has a screw like inside made for a finial. Short of taping them together, they wouldn't stay put.
